October 2024 in a list 📝
Time is flying. Day after day this baby grows a little more, makes discoveries and new experiences, learns to communicate with us and interacts with the world that surrounds her. She's barely 2 months old, but, as the weeks rush by, I find myself worrying I won't remember much of these early stages... mommy brain right?
When I can, I try and remind myself to just snap a photo and write something down even when things seem unconsequential. I want to go back to these snippets of life one day and see how it feels when all the memories come rushing back, flooding us with warmth.
Here are my notes from the month of October 2024.
How was October? Oh man, October was tough. We've been running on fumes, with so little sleep and rest it's ridiculous we haven't collapsed yet #newparents. A lot has happened: Pier has gone back to work and is currently trying to catch up on a huge backlog from when he was at home with us. In the meantime, Francesca and I passed our post-partum checkups with flying colours - brilliant! Life as a new-mom-new-human duo is still a work in progress, though, with lots of cuddles and, of course, challenges, too. Getting out of the house was especially difficult. We live on the third floor of an old mid-century condo with no elevator, so just the logistic of it all has felt daunting to me (and no, Francesca doesn't like be wrapped). The good news is that after the first few weeks, she's been waking up only 2 or 3 times per night, so we're slowly feeling less and less tired. So, who cares about going out! Hopefully the positive trend will continue through November.
Writing of the month? I published one short post for the blog in early October, which is quite unbelievable considering I'm holding a newborn in my arms 24/7. I wrote about becoming a mother and the contrasting feelings that this has triggered within me. There's a lot I want to share about this incredible journey, both the good and the bad, and everthing in between. How did labour go? How do I feel about breastfeeding? What help am I getting and from whom? So much to say, so little time.
Extra special thing of the month? My in-laws have been bringing me lunch every-single-day since we got back from the hospital. So far I've had tons of fantastic meals: lasagna, radicchio casserole, fresh gnocchi, savoury tarts, various soups, salsa verde, and banana bread just to name a few. Anna and Marcello are very generous when it comes to sharing family recipes, too - like this super cheesy quick bread , and this bean and radicchio soup) - plus they look after Francesca for an hour or so. Grateful I can take a break, eat, go for a walk or take a shower... basically, feel human again!
Movie of the month? Troll - I enjoy movies and series from northern Europe. This one, based on the nordic folklore creatures called Trolls , was a happy discovery on Netflix. A light watch that kept me company for a good afternoon while holding the baby to sleep.
Book of the month? This must be Ruth Reichl's memoir "Garlic and Sapphires". Loved reading about her adventures as the undercover restaurant critic for The New York Times, wig and all. Quite exciting isn't it? Also, her food descriptions are just so delicious... she knows how to awaken an appetite!
Purchase of the month? A few treats from Inedito Lab, my fave herbalist shop:
- a wintery herbal tea with pine needles and tiny red fruits that's now my go-to warm drink
- super nutricious bee's pollen from Tuscany
- lactation tea with fennel seeds and cumin
- and millet pills to strenghten my hair as we head towards the big post-partum hair fall (not looking forward to it).
Everything is top notch in terms of quality - I woudn't trust anybody else when it comes to getting the best (and safest) natural products.
Screenshot of the month? I keep going back to this vintage decor account on Instagram, it's so good. Our Christmas baubles box is overflowing already but if I had a bigger house (read: two christmas trees) I'd go for some vintage decorations like those in the screenshot above. Wonderfully whimsical!
Outfit of the month? In Italy we say "fare di necessità virtù", which broadly translates to making the best of any situation. I'm still learning to appreciate my new pp body and I know it's going to take a long time before I'll consider myself "fit", as in strong and healthy, again. My shape has changed dramatically - hello mommy pooch, hello flat bum - and EVERYTHING hurts. There's no time for sleeping, let alone for shopping. Basically, I live in my maternity leggings, nursing tops, and a couple of soft, warm sweaters. That's all I need when I'm home, but also saves me time when I want (can) go for a walk with or without Francesca. I just slip into my new trainers, put on a windbreaker and head out the door for a 15 minute stroll around the block. That's about it for my October most worn outfit. Comfortable, versatile, does the job.
